Engineering Jobs Abroad: Qualifications, Licensing, and Sponsorship

An engineering degree, the legal right to use an engineering title, and a sponsored visa are three different tests. An employer can want your experience and still be unable to nominate the occupation. A skills assessor can accept your qualification and still leave the visa decision to the immigration authority. A software job that uses the word “engineer” in the title is often not this problem. That search is in when a software role can be sponsored.

The employer test, separate from your qualification, is in how to find employers that can sponsor foreign workers. Payment requests are in how to verify a visa sponsorship job.

What each document is for

DocumentWhat it can showWhat it does not show
Degree or diplomaThat an institution awarded a qualificationThat the destination country treats it as the occupation on the visa list
Skills assessment, where that visa requires oneThat the named assessing authority has compared the qualification with its standardThat a visa is granted, or that you may sign regulated work
Professional registration or a protected titleThat the regulator allows you to practise or to use that title in that jurisdictionThat an employer is approved to sponsor you
Visa or work permitThat immigration permission was granted on its conditionsThat you are registered to practise

Some countries regulate the title “engineer” or “professional engineer.” Others regulate only specific acts, such as signing drawings for the public. A job as a design engineer inside a private company is not automatically one of those regulated acts. The regulator’s page for that country is the source. This article does not turn one country’s title rule into a worldwide licence.

Australia: assessment and sponsorship are not the same letter

Engineers Australia says it is authorised by the Department of Home Affairs to assess engineering qualifications for migration, and that you need its outcome letter before you apply for a visa on the pathways it assesses. Home Affairs, on its legislative-instruments page, names assessing authorities in some subclass instruments and names an occupation list for the Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, in LIN 24/089. Those pages do not use the same sentence. Before you pay for an assessment, read the instrument for the subclass the employer is actually nominating. Do not assume every 482 nomination uses the Engineers Australia letter, and do not assume a letter replaces sponsor approval.

Sponsor approval and the occupation list are explained in Australian employer-sponsored visas. Engineers Australia’s fee table changes. It is not quoted here. An assessment fee is not a visa fee and not a recruitment fee.

Other countries

In the UK, a Skilled Worker application still needs an eligible occupation, an approved sponsor, and a certificate of sponsorship. Chartered or incorporated status, where an employer asks for it, is a professional registration. It is not the sponsor register. The register check is in UK visa sponsorship jobs.

In Canada, the right to use “professional engineer” is set by the provincial or territorial regulator. That licence is not an LMIA and not a work permit. The work-permit steps are in Canada jobs for foreign workers. This article does not state one Canadian exam, because the colleges are not one college.

In Germany, an engineering role can fall under the EU Blue Card’s qualification and salary tests, and a regulated profession still needs a licence to practise. Those thresholds are immigration conditions. They are in Germany’s work visas and the EU Blue Card, including the warning not to merge official descriptions of the lower threshold.

Before you accept an engineering offer

  1. Ask whether the job requires a protected title or only an engineering degree.
  2. Ask which occupation code the visa will use, and whether that subclass names an assessing authority.
  3. Keep the assessment outcome, the professional register, and the visa application as three files.
  4. Compare pay with the immigration rule for that route, not with a salary survey and not with the assessment fee.
