Proof of Funds for International Students: What Counts and How Much You May Need

Proof of funds, for someone preparing to study abroad, is evidence that money exists for the study plan a school or a government has asked to see. It is not one worldwide balance, and it is not a promise that an offer or a visa will be granted. A university can ask for funding evidence before it issues an enrolment document. A government can ask again, under its own rules, when you apply for a student visa or study permit. The amount on either form can be lower than the budget you will actually spend.

Funding rules, amounts, and which papers count can change. Check the current page of the institution, the government authority, and any scholarship or loan provider before you rely on a document.

What proof of funds means for an international student

Three questions get mixed together. Who is asking? What period and which costs does that request cover? Which documents will that authority accept as money you can use? A bank printout answers none of those questions until you match it to the request.

Meeting the smallest official figure does not mean the year is paid for. Building that fuller cost is in how to calculate the real cost of study abroad.

What can count, and where the rules differ

Personal savings

A statement in your own name is the simplest file, and it is still not automatic. The United Kingdom’s Student visa page says money you rely on in an account must have been there for 28 days in a row, and the end of that period must fall within 31 days of the visa application. That holding rule is a UK immigration rule. Study in the States does not publish the same 28-day test for the US school file. The school decides which statements it accepts.

Parent or family funds

Home Office guidance for Student visa applicants says funds may be held by a parent or legal guardian, with proof of the relationship and written consent to use the money. A birth certificate or adoption certificate is among the relationship evidence that guidance describes. That is a UK rule. It is not a finding that every country wants a notarized affidavit, or that a friend can stand in for a parent. In the United States, Study in the States lists family bank statements and sponsor documents as examples, and then says the school sets the acceptable forms.

Scholarships and fellowships

An award can reduce what you still have to show, when the authority accepts it. On a UK Student visa, official financial sponsorship from a licensed student sponsor can be recorded on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, and the Home Office guidance says no separate sponsorship document is then required for that amount. A scholarship that is not on the CAS, or that a US school will not accept as funding evidence, does not fill the gap by itself. The letter needs the amount, what it covers, and whether it continues past the first term. A scholarship and a loan change the bill in different ways, which is set out in student loans versus scholarships.

Student or education loans

A loan application is not money. UK guidance treats a student loan letter as a separate kind of evidence from cash that must sit in an account for 28 days. The loan has to be provided to the applicant. A loan issued only to a parent does not count as the student’s loan, even if it was taken for study. The letter has to come from a provider the rules accept, including a government student-loan company or a regulated education-loan scheme. If the loan covers only part of the fees or living costs, the rest of the requirement still needs evidence. How loans sit inside a wider funding plan is in how to finance studies abroad.

For a US Form I-20, a loan letter helps only if that school accepts it. Study in the States does not say every loan approval is financial evidence. Conditional approval, a signed loan, and funds the lender will actually disburse are different documents. Ask the office that will receive the file which of those it will take.

Government or school sponsorship

Study in the States says F and M students are not eligible for US government-funded financial aid, while a school may still offer its own scholarship. Australia’s student-visa checklist says some applicants supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Department of Defence provide a letter of support instead of the ordinary funds file. Those are narrow official routes, not a general rule that a government somewhere will sponsor the year.

How much you may need to show

There is no single international amount. The figures below are time-sensitive immigration requirements, not permanent study-cost estimates. Check the linked government page again before applying. They are not the university’s bill.

For a UK Student visa, the current requirement on GOV.UK is the course fee for one academic year, up to nine months, as stated on the CAS, plus living costs of £1,529 per month if the course is in London or £1,171 per month if it is outside London, for up to nine months. London here means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. Money already paid can change what is still outstanding. Checked on 25 September 2026, these are immigration amounts, not an estimate of what it costs to live in the UK.

For a Canadian study permit, IRCC’s proof-of-financial-support page says you must show tuition, living expenses, and transportation, and that you cannot rely on working in Canada to make up the total. The living-expense amount excludes tuition and transportation, so it is not the complete study budget. For an application on or after 1 September 2026, the page’s table for provinces and territories other than Quebec lists CAN$23,448 per year for the applicant alone. Applications from 1 January 2025 through 31 August 2026 use a lower one-person living figure on the same page, CAN$22,895. Family members increase the living line. Quebec uses a separate table, which is not used here.

Australia’s student-visa checklist asks for evidence that you can cover travel, 12 months of living costs, tuition for you and accompanying family, and school costs for school-aged dependants, or evidence that a spouse or parents will support you and meet a minimum income. The checklist points to another Home Affairs step for the dollar figures. Those amounts are not copied here because that step was not the page opened for this article.

A US school does not use the UK monthly rate or the Canadian living table. The designated school official collects evidence that funding covers tuition and living expenses for the period of intended study before issuing the I-20. The consular officer can look at that evidence again. Neither review is the school’s cost of attendance, and neither is your personal budget.

Prepare the file, then check it

  1. Write down who is asking: the school, the visa authority, or both.
  2. Separate tuition from living costs, and from transport where that country adds it.
  3. List each source as savings, a parent’s account, a scholarship, a loan, or official sponsorship, and keep the paper that source requires.
  4. For a loan, mark whether you have only applied, have a conditional offer, or have an approval the authority accepts. Do not put an application in the file as if it were disbursable funds.
  5. Check dates, whose name is on the account, the currency, and whether a translation or a consent letter is required for that authority.
  6. Read the number on the current government or school page on the day you submit. An older screenshot of a living-cost table is a common reason a file is short.

Showing the figure the form asks for is one task. Paying for the year you will actually live is another. The second one starts from the school’s own budget, not from the visa minimum.
