How to Study Abroad Without IELTS: Other Proof of English Universities May Accept
Studying abroad without IELTS still means showing English in the way that university, and sometimes that visa office, accepts. Another test, a previous degree taught in English, the university’s own assessment, or a pre-sessional course can stand in for IELTS. None of them means the requirement has disappeared.
Another test the program lists
The comparison of IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE is in how to choose among those tests. A program can accept more than one. The University of Manchester’s MSc Aerospace Engineering, for 2027 entry, asks every applicant for English evidence. The course page accepts IELTS 7.0 with no sub-test below 6.5, TOEFL iBT 100 with no sub-test below 22, or PTE Academic 76 with no sub-test below 70. It does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores or the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. Some results must still be valid on the course start date, and the page says some tests are treated as valid for two years.
That TOEFL figure is the 0 to 120 scale still printed on the course page. TOEFL reports from 21 January 2026 also use a 1 to 6 scale. Do not convert 100 yourself. Ask the department which number on the current score report it will read. The same course is not a list of universities that waive English, and another Manchester course can set a different bar. The university’s own postgraduate page says English requirements usually sit somewhere in a wide IELTS-equivalent range and vary by department.
A visa rule is a second check
For a UK Student visa, degree-level study usually requires English equivalent to CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Below degree level, the level on the GOV.UK page is B1. You can meet the visa rule with a UK school qualification started before 18, a UK degree taught in English, a non-UK degree taught in English if Ecctis confirms it, or a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider. At degree level, a higher-education provider can assess your English itself, including with a test that is not a SELT, as long as the result is still B2 and the method is on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
Nationals of a list of countries on that page, including the United States, and Canadian nationals, do not have to prove English for the visa. The university can still require a test. Manchester’s aerospace page says applicants from the UK and overseas both show English. A visa exemption is not an admissions exemption.
Previous study in English
GOV.UK allows a degree taught in English outside the UK only with an Ecctis assessment that the qualification meets UK degree level and was taught in English. That is visa evidence. Whether a university will also accept that degree instead of a test is a line on the program page, or a written answer from admissions. Do not treat “I studied in English” as enough for both.
A pre-sessional course
Manchester’s aerospace MSc lists pre-sessional English run by the university as one way to meet the course requirement. A pre-sessional is extra study, not a waiver. On the UK visa route, a combined pre-sessional can involve a lower test level at the start only where the sponsor’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies says you will reach B2. Read the offer. If English is a condition, it is still a condition.
What to confirm before you skip IELTS
- Which tests or other qualifications that course page names.
- Whether a score from before 21 January 2026 and a score after that date are both accepted, and on which scale.
- Whether the visa application needs a SELT even though the university assessed you.
- The date the result must still be valid.
