How to Apply to Universities Abroad: Documents, Deadlines and Offers

A university application is the program’s own file, not a global checklist. The University of Manchester and the University of California, Berkeley both ask graduate applicants to apply online, and they do not ask for the same papers or use the same calendar. Read the page for the course you want, then build only that file.

Start on the program page

Manchester tells master’s applicants to check the course page for a closing date, because many of its master’s courses have none and some do. Berkeley tells applicants to open the program’s own site, because many programs add requirements on top of the university minimum, and an applicant may apply to only one degree program in a given term. A deadline on a national portal, or on a funding body, can be earlier than the university’s. Manchester says most funding bodies expect a provisional offer before a scholarship application.

What often goes in the file

These are examples from those two universities, not a list you can copy onto every form.

Manchester’s master’s form commonly asks for evidence of qualifications, such as certificates or transcripts, and official English translations if those documents are not in English. The translation has to identify the translator, the date, and a signature, and the university will not treat a classmate’s translation as official. It may ask for two references, sent by the referees through the university’s portal, and some courses ask for a research proposal or a personal statement with instructions on the department site. English-language evidence is requested when English is not your first language, and Manchester says some test results are treated as valid for two years and must still be valid on the course start date.

Berkeley’s graduate application asks you to gather materials at least three months ahead. The steps page names unofficial academic transcripts, recommenders, a statement of purpose, and a personal statement, plus any test the program requires. Some Berkeley schools, including the business and law schools, use a separate application. After you submit, you pay a non-refundable fee by the deadline. The page does not publish one fee for every program, so the amount has to come from the application you are actually submitting.

After you submit

Manchester sends a receipt, then an account you use to upload anything still missing and to accept or decline an offer. An interview is possible. Check the course profile rather than assuming one. Berkeley reviews complete files on a program timeline that can run from December into June, and decisions can arrive from late January through June. Neither university describes that review as a single score cutoff.

Conditional and unconditional offers

Manchester’s offer is either unconditional or conditional. A conditional offer still needs evidence that you have met the conditions, uploaded to the applicant portal. You may also be told to pay a deposit before the place is confirmed. Bring original documents when you register. Berkeley asks admitted applicants to accept or decline in the status portal. A deposit, a final transcript, or a test score can still sit between the letter and enrolment. The letter is the list that matters, not a general rule about what “conditional” means everywhere.

Keep each application separate

If you apply to more than one university, give each its own folder: the course URL, the deadline, the documents that page names, the fee, and the offer conditions. Do not send Manchester’s reference process to a university that wants letters uploaded by you, and do not assume Berkeley’s one-program-per-term rule applies in another country.
