Nursing Jobs Abroad: Registration, a Job Offer, and Visa Sponsorship
A hospital that offers a nursing job has not registered you as a nurse, and it has not been granted your visa. Those are separate decisions. The employer can support an immigration application only where that country’s rules allow it. The regulator decides whether you may practise. The visa authority decides whether you may enter and work. Mixing those steps is how a job advert starts to look like permission it does not have.

Three decisions that do not replace each other

United Kingdom: the register is not the visa
The Nursing and Midwifery Council handles registration for nurses and midwives who trained outside the UK. Its overseas route includes an eligibility and qualification application, and it may require a Test of Competence. NMC says some European qualifications that meet automatic-recognition rules do not need that test. The same pages also require English language, health and character evidence, a professional indemnity arrangement, and a registration fee. An identity check is part of the process. None of that is a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa.
GOV.UK tells nurses to look at the Health and Care Worker visa as a possible immigration route. It is cheaper than Skilled Worker in the way the Skilled Worker overview describes, and it is still an immigration application. NMC registration does not put you on that visa. A sponsor licence does not put you on the NMC register. You can hold a job offer and still be waiting on either one.
Other countries do not use the NMC
Canada does not register nurses through one national body in the way the UK uses the NMC. The college or order is provincial or territorial. A rule stated for one province is not a rule for another, and this article does not invent a single Canadian exam or fee.
Australia’s registration sits with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. That board’s requirements are not the NMC Test of Competence, and they are not an Australian Skills in Demand visa. Employer sponsorship, where it is available, is the Home Affairs process in Australia’s employer-sponsored visas. It does not confer registration.
In Germany, nursing is a regulated profession. Make it in Germany says that where a licence to practise is required, it must be in place or in prospect for an EU Blue Card application. The licence and the Blue Card salary test are both German rules. They are not an NMC decision. The Blue Card conditions are in Germany work visas and the EU Blue Card.
What to collect before you compare offers
- The regulator’s name for the country and, in Canada, the province.
- Whether your qualification needs an exam, a test of competence, or recognition, according to that regulator’s page.
- Whether English or another language evidence is the regulator’s requirement, the visa’s requirement, or both.
- Whether the employer is approved to sponsor the immigration route it names. In the UK, that is the sponsor register, not the NMC register.
- Whether anyone is asking you to pay a recruitment fee. Match the request to the regulator’s fee page or the visa fee page before you pay.
