Moving Abroad With a Family: Housing, Schools, Insurance and the Monthly Cost
Moving with a partner or a child changes the monthly budget. A larger home, childcare, school, and healthcare for more than one person are costs. Whether that partner or child can apply as your dependant is an immigration question. For a UK Skilled Worker route, who counts as a partner or child is in spouse and child visas. This article does not repeat those rules, and it does not set a visa’s savings test.
Housing
More bedrooms change the rent and the deposit. Use a written quote for the home you would actually take, and put the rent in the monthly budget. The deposit and any rent due before move-in stay in the one-time column. How to check the landlord, the tenancy, and the payment is in how to rent an apartment abroad as a newcomer. A student room is not a family home. Some universities do not house children at all.
Food, transport, and the first month
Food and local transport scale with the household. A fare for one adult is not the fare for two adults and a child. The first month also includes copies of documents, a local phone plan, and anything the home does not include, such as bedding. Add those to the setup line. Then build the savings sum in how much to save before moving abroad, with a personal reserve that is separate from any amount an immigration office asks you to show.
Healthcare
Cover for each person may be a public system, a visa health charge, an employer plan, or a private policy. Those are different products, compared in health insurance abroad. A charge paid for the main applicant does not automatically cover a partner or a child. Where a visa health surcharge exists, read whether it is charged per person. It is still not the whole health budget. Prescriptions, dentistry, and care the policy excludes can remain.
Childcare and school
A state or public school, a private school, and an international school are different products. A child is not automatically eligible for a free state place because a parent has a visa. Ask the school or the local education authority what status they require, and what they charge if the place is not free. Do not treat one school’s fee as the country’s price. No school fee is quoted here, because no school’s current fee page was used for a figure.
Childcare before school age is its own monthly line. A quoted nursery place is the source. A city average is not.

Eligibility, rents, and school fees can change. Verify the current term with the school, the insurer, or the landlord.
