How to Verify a Visa Sponsorship Job and Avoid Recruitment Scams

A message that says a job includes visa sponsorship is a claim. It is not a visa, and it is not proof that the employer is allowed to hire a foreign worker. The useful check is narrower: whether that employer is allowed to sponsor on the route named in the message, whether the vacancy is real, and whether any request for money matches the fee rule for that country. Those three answers come from official pages and from the employer’s own documents, not from the tone of the email.

Rules differ by country. A payment that is improper in one system can be a published government fee in another. This article does not turn the UK cash-payment warning, or Canada’s rule on recruitment fees, into a worldwide slogan.

What the message has to be claiming

Claim in the messageWhat would support itWhat does not support it
The employer can sponsorThe employer appears on that country’s current official sponsor list, for the route namedA logo, a familiar company name, or a sentence that says “we sponsor visas”
This vacancy is sponsoredA current offer that names the role, the site, and the immigration routeAn old news story that the employer once hired foreign workers
You can move on this offerYou meet the job requirements and the immigration rules for that routeThe fact that someone else with the same job title received a visa

A sponsor licence, a past hire, and a vacancy that is open today are different facts. An employer can be licensed and not be recruiting. An employer can be advertising and not be licensed for the route the message describes.

Check the employer on the official list for that country

United Kingdom

For a Skilled Worker visa, GOV.UK says you must have a job offer from an employer the Home Office has approved, and a certificate of sponsorship for the role. Approved sponsors are listed in the register of licensed sponsors for Worker and Temporary Worker routes. The register shows the route and the sponsor rating. It is updated often. A row in that register means the organisation is licensed for the route shown. It does not mean the organisation is advertising a job, and it does not mean your application will be granted. How to read the register against an offer is in UK visa sponsorship jobs.

The certificate of sponsorship is an electronic record with a reference number, not a paper visa and not a PDF that a stranger can email as proof by itself. GOV.UK says you apply for the visa after the sponsor issues it, and that you must apply within three months of receiving it.

Canada

IRCC tells people who have a job offer to check the list of employers who have been found non-compliant. If you apply for a work permit to work for an employer listed as ineligible, IRCC says the application will be refused. Absence from that list is not an approval. It means the employer has not been published there for a penalty or a ban. Most employer-specific work permits still need the employer to take earlier steps, often a labour market impact assessment, before you can apply. Those steps are in Canada jobs for foreign workers.

Job Bank is a separate check. Some postings are marked for candidates outside Canada. Others are limited to citizens, permanent residents, and people who already hold a work permit. A marking on a posting is not a work permit.

Australia and Germany

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs describes employer sponsorship as an approval to sponsor a worker for a named visa, such as the Skills in Demand visa. That approval is not a public promise that the employer is hiring. The subclass checks are in Australian employer-sponsored visas. Germany’s EU Blue Card and other work routes start from a concrete job offer that meets the conditions on the official portal. Neither system is checked by searching the UK sponsor register. The German conditions are in Germany’s work visas and the EU Blue Card.

Money and documents

GOV.UK’s visa-scam page says you will not be asked to pay for a UK visa using cash or a money transfer. That instruction is about paying for a UK visa. It does not decide whether an employer in another country may charge a recruitment fee, and it does not mean every official UK fee is optional. Application fees and the healthcare surcharge, where they apply, are paid through the official application, not by sending cash to a recruiter.

On the Canadian non-compliance page, one reason an employer can be listed is charging the foreign worker fees related to hiring, not including application processing fees. Another is failing to make sure that nobody involved in the hiring charged those fees. That is a Canadian program condition. It is not a finding about UK visa fees or German residence-title fees.

Before you pay anyone or send identity documents, match the request to a page on the government site for that visa. If the only instruction is a personal account, a messaging app, or a transfer service, stop and verify the employer on the official list first.

A short check before you reply

  1. Write down the country, the visa route, and the employer’s legal name as the message states them.
  2. Open that country’s official sponsor or non-compliance list and search the legal name, not the brand in the email signature.
  3. Ask which document the employer will issue: a UK certificate of sponsorship, a Canadian LMIA or offer-of-employment number, or the equivalent named on that country’s page.
  4. Compare the job title, work site, and pay in the offer with what the immigration route requires. An immigration salary threshold is not a typical wage for the occupation.
  5. If money is requested, identify whether it is a government application fee on an official page or a fee the message asks you to send to a person.

How to report a UK visa scam

GOV.UK tells you to contact Report Fraud and to include the email, the sender’s address, the date and time, and what you sent in reply, such as bank details or a password. Suspicious emails, letters, and calls can also be reported to the police through Report Fraud. Reporting instructions for Canada, Australia, and Germany are on those governments’ own sites. A UK report form does not cover a scam that is impersonating another country’s immigration authority.
